Culturable fungal diversity of shrimp Litopenaeus vannamei boone from breeding farms in Brazil BJM
Silva,Lidiane Roberta Cruz da; Souza,Odacy Camilo de; Fernandes,Maria José dos Santos; Lima,Débora Maria Massa; Coelho,Rosalie Reed Rodrigues; Souza-Motta,Cristina Maria.
Litopenaeus vannamei, which is the most common shrimp species cultivated in the northeast of Brazil, is very susceptible to microbial diseases, and this consequently affects productivity. There are reports of bacteria, viruses and protozoa in these shrimp, but not fungi. This study aims to isolate and identify fungi present in shrimp Litopenaeus vannamei, and in their nursery waters, at two breeding farms in Brazil. The pathogenic potential of the isolates was assessed through the qualitative detection of proteases and aflatoxin B production. The 146 isolated fungi comprised 46 species. Aspergillus, Penicillium and Furarium were the three most relevant genera and Aspergillus flavus was the predominant species with a total of 33 isolates. Most of the...

Design, fabrication and evaluation of horizontal rotary separator of olive oil (Three-Phase Decanter) CIGR Journal
Rashvand, Mahdi; Akbarnia, Abbas.
Olive is one of the strategic products in Iran, and due to the significant cultivation area of this product, oil companies should be equipped with suitable processing equipment. Unfortunately, despite the high capacity of olive in Iran, oil companies are equipped with imported machines. In this study, the construction and evaluation of the Three-counter device of Iran has been developed. The machine has three oil, water and olive pulp outputs. In order to evaluate the machine, the amount of moisture content and fat extracted from the machine was checked at 2500 and 3500 rpm and 30 and 45% water content. Also, four different samples Manzallina, Fishemi, Kalamata and Oily were used in this experiment. The main components of the machine include an electric...

Devolution and Accountability Effects in the Public Provision of Water Services in Indonesia AgEcon
Meirelles, Patricia; Rodriguez, Catherine.
This paper separately evaluates how devolution and accountability, two distinct aspects of the decentralization reforms implemented in Indonesia in the year 2001, influenced the public provision of water services. Using household level data it is found that the devolution of responsibility does not necessarily affect the provision of public services. Our findings show that the quality of publicly provided water decreased only in cities in which devolution was accompanied by a change in accountability. Robustness checks suggest that these results are driven by changes in the accountability framework rather than trends in the health services.

Diagnostic moléculaire de l'origine des contaminations fécales dans l'environnement littoral - Développement de marqueurs Bacteroidales spécifiques de l'hôte ArchiMer
Mieszkin, Sophie.
Human and animal faecal pollution affects environmental water in inland and coastal areas, with negative implications for recreational uses, public safety and shellfish sanitary status due to the presence of enteric pathogens. Starting from 2011, the revised Bathing Water European Directive (2006/7/CE) requires the establishment of bathing water profiles with an inventory and study of the pollution sources likely to affect water quality. The faecal microbiological indicators used in these regulations, Escherichia coli and enteroccoci, cannot distinguish between human and animal faecal contamination. Thus, alternative methods, that focus on target microorganisms such as bacteria belonging to the Bacteroidales order were developed or are being developed to...

Different sodium levels and electrolyte balances in pre-starter diets for broilers Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Avic.
Maiorka,A; Magro,N; Bartels,HAS; Kessler,AM; Penz Jr,AM.
An experiment with 400 one-day-old male chicks (Ross) was conducted to evaluate the effects of different Na levels (0.10, 0.22, 0.34 and 0.46%) and different cation/anion balances (Na+K-Cl) (100, 150, 200, 250 and 300 meq/kg) in pre-starter diets on broiler performance. The corn and soybean-based diets had 22% crude protein and 2,900 kcal/kg metabolizable energy and were fed ad libitum. Performance data showed a positive quadratic effect of increasing Na levels on feed and water consumption, weight gain and feed conversion. Na+K-Cl also had a quadratic influence on feed intake and weight gain. None of the effects tested affected the amount of water measured in excreta. Derivatives of obtained regression equations pointed to optimal Na levels of 0.45% for...

Drinking water as a risk factor to poultry health Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Avic.
Amaral,LA do.
In the poultry industry, the use of water with adequate physical, chemical and microbiological quality it is of fundamental importance. Since many birds have access to the same water source, quality problems will affect a great number of animals. The drinking water plays an important role in the transmission of some bacterial, viral and protozoan diseases that are among the most common poultry diseases. Important factors to prevent waterborne diseases in broiler production are the protection of supply sources, water disinfection and the quality control of microbiological, chemical and physical characteristics. Water is an essential nutrient for birds and therefore quality preservation is fundamental for good herd performance. The farmer may prevent many...

Carvalho, Fátima Cristiane Teles de; Rodriguez, Marina Teresa Torres; Menezes, Francisca Gleire Rodrigues de; Sousa, Oscarina Viana de; Hofer, Ernesto; Vieira, Regine Helena Silva dos Fernandes.
Our objective was to group in ecotypes 12 serovars of Salmonella isolated from shrimp farming environments in the State of Ceara (Northeast Brazil). Grouping was done based on genotypic virulence factors. Two groups based on the similarity of the Box-PCR were identified: a group consisting of three strains (01 S. ser. Madelia serovar and 02 S. ser. enterica subs. houtenae) and another group consisting of nine isolates (02 S. ser. Saintpaul serovars; 03 S. ser. Infantis; 02 S. ser. Panama; 01 S. enterica subs. enterica; and 01 S. enterica subs. houtenae). Distribution pattern of the serovars was not influenced by the origin matrices (water and sediment). Plasmid virulence genes pefA and invA were detected, unrelated to the serovar and environmental origin...

Effect of man-made electromagnetic fields on common Brassicaceae Lepidium sativum (cress d'Alinois) seed germination: a preliminary replication study Phyton
Cammaerts,MC; Johansson,O.
Under high levels of radiation (70-100 µW/m2 =175 mV/m), seeds of Brassicaceae Lepidium sativum (cress d'Alinois) never germinated. In fact, the first step of seeds' germination ‒ e.g. imbibitions of germinal cells ‒ could not occur under radiation, while inside the humid compost such imbibitions occurred and roots slightly developed. When removed from the electromagnetic field, seeds germinated normally. The radiation was, thus, most likely the cause of the non-occurrence of the seeds' imbibitions and germination.

Effect of timing of a deficit-irrigation allocation on corn evapotranspiration, yield, water use efficiency and dry mass NWISRL
Payero, J.O.; Tarkalson, D.D.; Irmak, S.; Davison, D.; Petersen, J.L..
Water regulations have decreased irrigation water supplies in Nebraska and some other areas of the USA Great Plains. When available water is not enough to meet crop water requirements during the entire growing cycle, it becomes critical to know the proper irrigation timing that would maximize yields and profits. This study evaluated the effect of timing of a deficit-irrigation allocation (150 mm) on crop evapotranspiration (ETc), yield, water use efficiency (WUE = yield/ETc), irrigation water use efficiency (IWUE = yield/irrigation), and dry mass (DM) of corn (Zea mays L.) irrigated with subsurface drip irrigation in the semiarid climate of North Platte, NE. During 2005 and 2006, a total of sixteen irrigation treatments (eight each year) were...

Kuti, Ibrahim Abayomi; Kuti, Ibrahim Abayomi; Musa, John Jiya; Adeoye, Peter Aderemi; Animashaun, Murtala Iyanda; Abbah, Victor; Adabembe, B. A.; Aroboinosen, Hillary.
Treated sewage sludge (Defective) has been identified to increase heavy metals in the soil which are in turn transferred to plants. In view of this, the study is aimed at assessing the effects of treated sewage sludge on the quality parameters of okra fruits. The randomized block design was employed in raising okra plants with three treatments (0t/ha, 10t/ha, and 20t/ha sewage sludge amendment) over a land area of 56.3m2. Soil analysis was used to determine the level of nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium in the soil. After 2months, the okra fruits were harvested by cutting the pods off, slicing, oven drying, milling, and labeled correctly prior to laboratory analysis. The heavy metal content in the okra fruit were analysed using atomic absorption...

Effect of vacuum impregnation temperature on the mechanical properties and osmotic dehydration parameters of apples BABT
Paes,Sabrina Silva; Stringari,Gustavo Beulke; Laurindo,João Borges.
The effect of sucrose solution temperature on the mechanical properties, water loss (WL), solids gain (SG) and weight reduction (WR) of apples (Fuji var.) treated by vacuum impregnation was studied. Temperatures were varied from 10 to 50 ºC, using a sucrose solution of 50 ºBrix. The mechanical properties were studied throughout a stress relaxation test. The results showed that the SG varied between 10.57 and 14.29 % and the WL varied between 10.55 and 14.48 %. The treated fruit soluble solids increased with the temperature probably due to the lower viscosity of the solution. The maximum stress was highest at 10 ºC, decreasing at higher temperatures, probably due the softening of the structure.
